BA2A♥Art Test♥Monkey Island

06:33

For our internal art test, I picked the Monkey Island: Lost Cove prompt. I watched a playthrough of the game to get the feel for the atmosphere before starting to create my character.

I didn't really understand why there would be a temple underwater in the prompt, or why there would be a shop in an underwater temple, so I tried to link all of the aspects together when creating my character. I came up with the idea of a rogue-like character who was condemned by a religion for profiting off stolen goods, whose spirit is forever attached to the temple so they could keep an eye on them. After the temple sunk to the bottom of the ocean, the ghost of the rogue continues to set up shop now that there's nobody left at the temple to stop them.

I started off by creating silhouettes for my character.

After this, I started to draw over the top of the silhouettes until I created a basic design I was happy with.

Then, I started adding colour for the 'daytime' version of the character. I knew I wanted the silhouette to remain mostly the same between the daytime and night-time versions so the character could stay recognisable. However, I wanted the colour scheme to swap between a brighter, daytime version and a darker, cooler set of colours for the twilight version.

After picking the version with the green shawl and skirt, I worked on the twilight version of the character, making her more 'ghostly' and cursed-looking while still retaining roughly the same silhouette.

Once I'd decided on my two designs, I began to draw them up properly and create callouts.

Another drawing of the 'twilight' form.
