BA1B ★ Task 1 ★ Desk Lamp

13:00

For our first task this unit, we were asked to 3D model a lamp. Having not used 3D modelling software before the start of this unit, I found this task quite difficult but treated it as an exercise in getting used to Maya and how it functions.

I constructed this lamp mostly out of cylinders as a base shape, resizing, warping and tilting them to form the correct look for a simple desk lamp.  The switch is made out of two rectangles laid on top of one another, with the top one tilted to resemble a switch button set in position.

Overall, I have conflicting feelings regarding the outcome this first project. I found it very difficult to manipulate the shapes in order to create the look I wanted for the lamp, with the result that it seemed a little bit 'blocky' and unrealistic. However, the process of using Maya to make the lamp adequately prepared me for future projects in which I would now be able to use more complicated techniques to complete, since I felt more familiar and comfortable with how it functioned after this task.
