PART 1: Silhouettes
To begin my work on this project, I started by creating silhouettes of various shapes and sizes using my own ideas of insect-like attributes. Although I tried not to make the silhouettes too similar to those of real-life insects, in some silhouettes I found it quite easy to establish which insects I had borrowed qualities from (such as scorpions, praying mantis and dragonflies).

As I made more and more silhouettes, it became somewhat easier to combine and alter aspects I'd already used to create more unique silhouettes which did not replicate existing creatures quite so closely. However, after about 30 silhouettes, I found that I had started to fall into a trend of a certain body and leg shape combination, and began to find it increasingly more difficult to create new shapes for my silhouettes, and decided that perhaps it was time to pick the silhouette I would begin working from.
I eventually decided on this silhouette as I thought that it wasn't as specific as some of my other silhouettes, which felt overworked. This silhouette would allow me the flexibility to interpret each shape differently each time, unlike some of the other silhouettes where I had already put in too much detail based on my first ideas to create multiple diverse iterations.
